Health Risks
There are many factors that influence health, such as nutrition, rest andexercise.  Some risks to our health include alcohol, tobacco, drugs andtraffic accidents.
Alcohol
Alcohol is common, but it can present many serious health risks.  When consumed, it passes into the blood through the digestive system, then it travels to the brain and alters the way the brain functions.
The effects of alcohol depend on the quantity consumed.  After drinking alcohol, a person can experience loss of reflexes, blurred vision andintoxication.  Intoxication can lead to unconsciousness and even death.
Alcohol abuse can lead to alcoholism which is a chronic illness.  It candamage the liver and the nervous system.  In other words it can damage our physical and mental well-being.

Tobacco
Smoking tobacco can be one of the most damaging habits a person can have.  It damages the respiratory and circulatory system and can cause various types of cancer like lung-cancer.
Passive smoking is when a non-smoker breathes in smoke from someone who is smoking.  It can cause the same illnesses as regular smoking and it also applies to an embryo or fetus.  If the mother smokes, this can lead tobirth defects in her baby.
Drugs
Drugs are mind-altering substances.  They can change person’sperceptions, their state-of-mind, or their behavior.  There are many types of drugs.  Alcohol and tobacco are types of drugs.  Drugs can be made by pharmaceutical companies, but if they are abused they can cause harm. Heroin, cocaine, marijuana, and many types of pills are also drugs.  They can be consumed by smoking, injecting, eating or inhaling.
People who consume drugs often develop a dependency.  This means that the person can’t stop taking the drug.  When this happens we say that the person is addicted.
Traffic Accidents
Traffic accidents are a primary cause of death and injury.  To avoid traffic accidents, drivers should observe the traffic-safety rules.  The most important thing is to respect the speed limit and stay a safe distance from other vehicles.  Passengers should always wear a seat-belt. Accidents involve pedestrians when a car runs someone over.  To avoid this, we should always cross the street at the crosswalks.
