Technical
Advances and Society
Technical scientific
advances have shaped modern
society. Machines have transformed the world of work in many ways, for
example:
Machines can do work that is difficult and tiring for people like cranes.
Machines can do the work of more than one person at once.
A combine harvester does
the work of many human workers. Computers and photocopiers have changed office work.
Modern transportation allows us to travel in ways that
were impossible 100 years ago. People
can live far away from their place
of work but can go by train, bus or car.
Airplanes make it easier to go on holiday to far away countries. Goods can
travel the world in boats and planes.
Distance is no longer a problem for business.
A little more than 100 years ago, vaccinations, anaesthesia and medical
imaging did not exist. Doctors did
not know the causes of diseases or
how they spread. Today we use x-ray, MRI and other machines to look inside the human body and we
have the ability to transplant some
organs.
Until the arrival of electricity, messages we sent by foot or by horse. Today the telephone, radio, TV and internet
give instant communication anywhere on the planet. About 500 years ago the printing press was invented. This made it possible to publish books
quickly. As a result culture and entertainment were available to many
more people. More recently, cinema, radio, TV and internet have become ways to spread
entertainment and culture.
